Nearly twenty years ago, Diggs had befriended, then recruited, young Mariella Martinez. She occupied a very special position in the Venezuelan oil giant, PDVSA, that gave her access to private meetings, files, and intimate knowledge of the comings and goings of important men. As part of her training, Diggs had taught her how to conceal small items in places where few people might look for them. The hollow underside of a toilet was one of those.
He used his foot to lightly push the rim of the foul ceramic throne, and it moved easily under the pressure. The bolts had been loosened. Then he gave it a solid kick and sent it tumbling over on its side, and it broke into four large pieces, scattering with a bang on the linoleum floor. From underneath, a dirty plastic bag fell out, twisted and wrapped tightly with duct tape.
He picked it up and went back into the main room and stood in front of the window where he had more light to see. Peeling the tape back, he could tell the package had not been sealed that long ago. The adhesive on the tape was still gooey and strong. He paused for an instant, considering that the thing he held in his hands had likely been in Mariellaâs delicate hands not long ago.
He pulled the tape off and untwisted the bag, then shook out the contents into his palm. The first was a piece of paper folded many times until it was small enough to fit into the concealed hiding bag. The second, a small photograph that was carefully rolled into a tube, like a cinnamon stick from a French cafe. He slipped the folded paper into his pocket, then gently unrolled the photo.
It was a photograph of Mariella, sitting at a small bistro table in a restaurant. She was leaning forward on the table with her elbow, her hand tucked under her chin, and completely absorbed by the man who sat across from her. She was smiling, and happy, and had a look on her face that could only be interpreted as contentment.
Only a slight profile of the man across from her could be seen, as his back was mostly to the camera. But Diggs knew instantly that it was him. He couldnât quite remember the moment, but he recognized the restaurant. It had been a regular meeting place for the two of them. He wondered who might have taken the photo and given it to her. A friend perhaps? Or maybe it was a surveillance photo taken by one of his adversaries. It didnât really matter anymore.
He looked up and stared out across the smoke-filled valley, and the skyline of Caracas, trying to remember the last words he spoke to her before sending her back into the dangerous world of spies. He could picture the last meeting. He could see her face and smell the Chanel Coco Mademoiselle perfume that heâd given her only two days before the last time he saw her.
